What’s Chain of Custody?

Chain of custody is the unbroken path which takes products from the forest to the consumer. Customers are increasingly seeking evidence of environmentally sound business practices and demand reassurance and proof that wood used comes from sustainably managed sources.

Chain of custody certification provides evidence that the certified product originates from certified well-managed forests and confirms that these products are not mixed with products from uncertified forests at any point in the supply chain.
A Chain of custody system needs to identify critical control points in your processes where there is a possibility for mixing certified and uncertified material and put in place controls to ensure that mixing does not occur.

A Chain of custody system can be fully integrated with existing quality and/or environmental management systems. There are two assessment schemes available FSC Chain of Custody Assessment or PEFC Chain of Custody Assessment

What’s FSC?

FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council. FSC is an international not-for-profit membership-based organization that brings people together to find solutions to the problems created by bad forestry practices and to reward good forest management. For more details visit www.fsc.org

What’s PEFC?

PEFC stands for Programme for Enforcement of Forest Certification schemes. It is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation founded in 1999. It provides an assurance to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting sustainable management of forests. For more details visit www.pefc.org
